VICTORIA WEST UBUNTU MUNICIPALITY BATTERY THIEVES SENTENCED
The Prosecution and Investigation teams led by Mr Caswell Joseph and Detective Sergeant Mojalefa Mokitimi succesfully secured a 10 year imprisonment sentence, handed down by the Victoria West Regional Court to 31 year old Phakamile De Bruin and his accomplice, following the unlawful and intentional removal of municipal property in Victoria West on Sunday 18 February 2024.
The investigation revealed that the accused and his accomplice trespassed on municipal property where a refuse collection truck was parked. The pair disconnected two truck batteries valued at approximately R4 000.
The Court found the accused guilty and sentenced 31 year old Phakamile De Bruin to 10 years imprisonment for theft and imposed a 12 month direct imprisonment to his accomplice, 21 year old Samkelo Mdini. Both were declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The police will ensure that those who deprive citizens of services are brought to book and pleads with communities to report such criminality.
