You are a Gemmie!

More than 2,000 first-year students from Sol Plaatje University filled Mittah Seperepere Convention Center on 19 February for a formal welcoming ceremony, which is the last step of confirming that indeed they are Gemmies, as the Principal, Professor Andrew Crouch, enthusiastically informed them.

This ceremony followed a vigorous two weeks on the campus of being orientated to the new lifestyle.  “You are here to obtain an education, not only a university degree.  This is the first step to realising your hope and dreams.  Dreams and hope fills us with courage and makes us strong,” echoed the Professor.

He encouraged students to cultivate a value system and respect the university’s ethos.

Crouch thanked the students for allowing him and the council to dress in their academic attire, as this only happens on such occasions and on Graduation day.   He highlighted the importance of both days.  “These milestones affirm the journey of a young person, who is fortunate to have made it through the challenges and difficulties in their lives.”

“You are special because out of 47 000 applicants, you made it”, remarked the Professor.  He added, “This year marks the 11th intake of 1st-years and is the largest group of that we have enrolled in the university’s history.  The university admitted 2166 from all nine provinces in South Africa, 36% from the NC, 24% from NW, 9% from Gauteng, 8% from KZN and Mpumalanga, 7% from EC, and 2% each from WC and Limpopo); these figures indicate diversity and our footprint as a university.”

He reminded students. “You are the generation that overcame poverty and inequality given the challenges that the country is facing.  Some parents are unemployed and often rely on government grants.”

Crouch encouraged students to appreciate the support from people who were there through their journey, including teachers and parents.

He asked students to focus on education as a means for social and economic transformation.

“This transformation might be such that it brings you into conflict with yourself and your families, but don’t worry, it is meant to make you a better person but never forget where you come from, and who assisted you to get to where you are today,” admonished Crouch.

The current SRC President, Letlhogonolo Thinta, delivered his message of support and welcome to the new students.  He assured them that, “fun you will have but don’t forget the reason for being here,” said the witty President.  Thintha informed the audience that he is the first SRC President in the history of SPU to have enrolled for an honours degree.

The session ended with excitement when Gemmie, the mascot entered the gallery.
